about

HIDDEN (2021) – BOBBY RAUSCH’s profound EP follows their energy-charged debut album SOAP (2020). The new EP is confidently low-key and packed with inner strength.
If BOBBY RAUSCH have mastered anything, it’s probably the idea of breaking with convention. And it starts right from their unusual combination of ultra-low-frequency instruments, with bass clarinet (Lutz Streun) meeting baritone sax (Oleg Hollmann) meeting drums (Jürgen Meyer). As a trio, the musicians generate a sound spectrum that is as inconceivable as the band line-up itself. From instrumental hip-hop, to electrobeats, to grunge riffs, there are no limits when it comes to exploring sounds. Many jazz musicians have gone to great lengths to push genre boundaries, but rarely have they managed to do so in as exciting and contemporary, indeed even trend-setting, a way as BOBBY RAUSCH.
Whether it’s at Europe’s biggest jazz festivals (Elbjazz Hamburg, Injazz Rotterdam, Xjazz Istanbul), at established traditional jazz clubs (Unterfahrt Munich, Jazzclub Tonne Dresden), on the hottest techno and hip-hop dance floors (Watergate, Sisyphos) or the 1st of May demonstration in Kreuzberg, BOBBY RAUSCH are at home on any stage and can captivate any audience instantly. It’s no wonder their fan base is so broad when their compositions reflect the diversity of their listeners. As far as BOBBY RAUSCH are concerned, limits only exist to be broken.
The summer of 2021 will finally see them once showcase their boundary-pushing prowess again: in the form of the EP Hidden. The title is a reference to the fact that the true rapture of the deep feeds on our carefully concealed secrets. Beyond sheltered everyday life, with all its entrenched routines, the band embarks on a quest for the inexorable ecstasy of the unexpected and hidden.
The five individual tracks each have their own personal vibe, yet are all impressions of a single urban night. The EP kicks off with Jetzt, an anthem to the moment, with an expert contribution from DJ ILLVIBE on the decks, followed by Crossing, a song celebrating doubts and difficult decisions, as these are the moments in which we find our strength. The omnipresence of the COVID-19 crisis – another subject the EP addresses – is the theme of Durban Poison 19. Drawing inspiration from Herbie Hancock’s quote ‘Deal with the reality. Take any situation you have, and make something constructive happen with it. Make poison to medicine’, the band creates a super audiophile drug available in unlimited supply. On the B-side, thoughts initially stray into the darkness of the subway tunnels, with Retro Metro conjuring up images of the band members’ idols. Jimi, Pharoah, Bob and John are all equally lost in thought as they make their way through the endless big-city labyrinth. The EP ends with the deepest of dives; anyone wanting to explore these depths must set sail themselves and dare to brave the open seas, follow the sirens and ultimately get shipwrecked – Hidden Message, Open Water.
There is nothing conventional or mainstream’ about this Berlin-based band’s compositions. Anyone who, for example, primarily associates electronic effects pedals like Octavers, Distortions, Whammies or Synths with electric guitars will find themselves well and truly questioning their chain of associations after listening to HIDDEN. Because the EP features anything and everything capable of taking instrumentation to new musical heights. The band is just as adept at applying soft analogue delays as it is with the maddest digital distortion. The mix of killer bass lines and nostalgic melodies, futuristic beats and intimate moments makes HIDDEN a record spanning the full spectrum of emotions. Over the five tracks, listeners transition from casual bopping, to sensuous floating, to technoid ecstasy. At the end, they are rewarded with a unique, literal rapture that rises up from the greatest of depths.
So it’s no surprise that the trio is regularly declared a ‘Berlin sound’. BOBBY RAUSCH is Berlin: musically diverse, fearless and never out of breath, despite the fast pace. So it is only logical that renowned Berlin figures collaborated on HIDDEN. DJ Illvibe (Seeed, Marteria, Peter Fox) is featured in the opening track. The EP was mixed by Tilman Hopf (Bukahara, Jose Gonzales & String Theory) and mastered by Beat Halberschmidt (Marteria and Lychee Lassi). Each track is accompanied by an uncompromising film clip created by five Berlin visual artists. The releases of the individual singles between April and August 2021 will be followed by the ‘full edition’ on vinyl.

about

Bobby Rausch Berlin, Germany

If BOBBY RAUSCH has perfected anything, it's breaking away from convention. This is evident right off the bat with their unusual line-up: bass clarinet (Lutz Streun) meets baritone saxophone (Oleg Hollmann) meets drums (Jürgen Meyer) - performing as a trio, these musicians conjure up sound effects that are as unpredictable as the band itself. ... more
