about

Sound waves pelt down on us like rain. In the morning, still a bit dull and slow, I hear the lifeless automatic announcements on the platform, the sounds of engines, footsteps. At noon, it's the voices that conquer the acoustic space in my head: conversations, opinions, statements, newspaper articles. It's not until the evening that the music gets through to me. Music, what it can be - distraction or concentration, art, intoxication, body, thought, dirt, disgust, escape. Like water, it changes these and countless other aggregate states without pause, always seeming from a distance to be only a hint of something possible. Samples from passing cars, bass frequencies carried by the wind, myriads of loudspeakers scattered throughout the city - they all create a sound plasma in statu nascendi. If one gets closer to the source of the music, it suddenly freezes, becomes a fact, a statement, in the worst case even a complete "culture". She forces her story on me. Without house rules or instructions, she knows how to show what kind of behavior is customary in her presence. The tension resolved, the mystery solved, now everyone knows what to do, what role to play.
Perhaps curiosity about this very moment, when the beauty of openness all too often becomes irreversibly fixed, is the most important thing for Bobby Rausch. At a jazz festival polished to a high gloss, in a rusty club in an East Berlin industrial area, unplugged at an art exhibition as on a meter-high open-air stage, we try to keep the sound plasma in motion. Beats, styles, riffs, quotes - they are formed by the music itself, we want to work with it, even play. Only to lifeless solid facts they should not solidify. The only fact for Bobby is still the creative flow, the cold rain of musical freedom - The Fact of Rain.

about

Bobby Rausch Berlin, Germany

If BOBBY RAUSCH has perfected anything, it's breaking away from convention. This is evident right off the bat with their unusual line-up: bass clarinet (Lutz Streun) meets baritone saxophone (Oleg Hollmann) meets drums (Jürgen Meyer) - performing as a trio, these musicians conjure up sound effects that are as unpredictable as the band itself. ... more
